It's coming along at a good clip, though I still don't want to commit to a release date yet.

Forgive me if this has been mentioned. Do you know how many mines the British layed in their East Coast minefield barrage thats now in NYGM?

I did a little math on the East Coast minefield in NYGM.

I estimate there to be the equivalent of 620 minefield circles of 5 KM radius. The density all minefields is 10 units/ KM^2 So

Area of all circles * 10 =

620*(5^2 * pi)*10 = 486,700 mines.

There are approxamately half a million mines in the NYGM East Coast mine barrage. Is that historical? It seems like a bit much to me. :hmm:
How much time was spent after the war clearing all of those mines?

Edit

Ok, found something on this:

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/report/1997/Morris.htm

They estimate the total number of naval mines used in WWII by both sides in all theaters to be 700,000. So the NYGM East Coast minefield (would represent 5/7 of all mines used in WWII) may be too numerous, but only slightly. It was a large field, but the US had a sizable mining effort in the Pacific too...

Hey NYGM modders i had a quick question. Are there any GERMAN convoys modeled in the Med or Atlantic, Nord See? I have seen Italian convoys and sailed with my brothers in arms but id like to fight some british planes alongside some German DDs. Yep Thanks

booger2005,
A very good question, my reading has suggested that during WWII Allies and Axis countries laid about 630,000+ sea mines in European and Atlantic waters.

So technically you are correct regarding the East Coast Barrage.

So, for the non external guys reducing the amount would be a good idea, but for those who wish to use the external view or the persiscope when submerged to allow them to bypass the minefields as if they did not exist, then maybe we should raise the number?

Which reminds me, I never did did finish the Irish Sea minefield barrage etc.

From Campbell, quoting a March 1945 report:

Total UK laid mines iin protective fields was over 170,000, mostly in the Iceland - Faroes barrier. The Iceland - Faroes barrier apparently only sank 1 U-boat - though I believe more were lost in the English Channel due to mines.

You need to have ahistorically high mine densities to deter submerged navigation with clear water by periscope (as has already been pointed out - this isn't RUB).

Playing "real" and I woundn't go within 10 miles of a declared minefield!

Now where can I DL a copy of all these declared minefields so I can avoid them like the plague. Very Happy
