Great mod!
I'm using medium compressed smoke and see no slow down! |

I played around a bit with TimeTraveller´s excellent tweakingtools. You can do some pretty cool stuff with it;)
I am not entirely happy with it yet, but it starts to look like thick oily smoke. |

The one viewed through periscope is quite impressive looking smoke pillar. Should it look more darker or "black" if it's burning oil (and other synthetic stuffs)? (We had a huge fire in used car tyre warehouse couple of years a go and that smoke was BLACK and big one). |

I was also messing around with TT's tool, and found that really tall smoke columns begin to disply graphical anomalies, such as flickering and temporarily disappearing. Is that happening with you?
So in my smoke mod, I decided to make a much smaller column. Btw, I have an ATI Radeon 9800pro. |

I never thought I'd be missing something from SHII, but there was an explosion and smoke mod that left smoke hanging in the sky for hours after a ship sank. Something like that would be nice for SHIII.
Oh, and the mod looks cool, but might be a bit much for my system. |

I tried that. It doesn't work as well as one might think.
For one, it really lags up the system, since SH3 isn't able to stop particle generation. If we were to leave the particles to just sit on the water surface, it would keep generating until we CTD.
And two, if we sink too many ships in a convoy, the leftover smoke would be overkill on the FPS. I'm sure residual smoke would look nice, but unnecessary if you factor in the loss of FPS. |

Oh, I was already sure it couldn't be done, or someone would have done it. I was just thinking how nice it would be. |

@Krupp
Yes, i agree. Oilfires are much darker. But the darker i make it, the more detail it loses, and i no longer get this puffy cloudlike look.
@Marhkimov
Yes, if i make the smoke any taller then this it starts to flicker. So this is about as high as i can go on my system.
And i have another problem. Whenever i look in the direction of the sun, all smoke in the game turns white.(even at night). Alt-Tabbing out of the game fixes it temporarily, but as soon as i look into the sun, it turns white again. Very annoying. Does anyone have similar problems and/or knows how to fix it?
Oh and is there a way to refresh the particle system while the game is running? Right now every time i change a value i have to restart the game to see the effect. Thats a big pain, cause SH3 takes ages to load on my computer;) |

It might help you to know that running a mission from the naval academy loads a lot faster.
But other than that, you still have to quit the entire SH3 in order to make changes. Yeah, it sucks, but at least it sucks for everyone. |

boomshekah, the white smoke is common with all NVidia cards. As far as I know there is no fix for it other than Alt-Tab out and back in. |

Oh ok, thanks HW3. Maybe a future driver release will fix it. |
