Silent Steel: The Mysterious Death of the Nuclear Attack Sub USS Scorpion will be released December 23. It can be purchased in advance online at Amazon and Barnes & Noble online until it's on the shelves.

It can be viewed at Wiley & Sons website through this link: http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0471267376.html

Amazon.Com's webpage for the book is: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0471267376/qid=1124767809/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/103-4958600-8710247?v=glance&s=books

Barnes & Noble's website posting containing additional reviews not on Amazon can be viewed here:
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=RE73WUTTKL&isbn=0471267376&itm=3

The book is an effort to provide a more complete picture of the Scorpion's history and disappearance and uncovers a greatly expanded account of the investigation, the story behind its near-miraculous discovery and the resultant controversy over the cause of the disaster.

I wonder if this book mentions the stories that the Scorpion was torpedoed and sunk by a Soviet sub while shadowing a Soviet naval exercise.
I heard those stories while in the Navy myself, and supposedly there is a sunken Soviet sub about a mile away from the Scorpion on the bottom, which was sunk by counterfire from the Scorpion, and which would explain why one of the Scorpion's torpedo tubes is open and empty.
Another part of the story is that this has been an ongoing coverup by the US government ever since. Of course if any of this were true, we'd never know (until perhaps many years from now).
Does make for a good "Conspiracy Theory" though.. Confused

I have just finished reading this book.It is well written but the author never comes up with a definitive reason for the loss.
