I think you'll like this site very much! Yep

Russian WW 1 U-boats (www.navy.ru)

sample pics:

U-boats "Karp", "Karas" and "Kambala" (Krupp-export U-boats) on the passage to ...?

Public flag ceremony on "Karp", "Karas" and "Kambala".

More images of these boats found here (www.morflot.tsi.ru).

Better image of the flag ceremony event, found here (militera.lib.ru) .

Blueprint of "Karp" (also found on the www.navy.ru - site)

The following text is a Babelfish translation, I'll try to edit this crap later...
( I guess i have to be very bored to do this, right now its more satisfying to "hunt" for more info / photos... ; - )

Quote:
On 24 May, 1904, with the firm Of f. Krupp was signed contract to building of the 3rd submarines of the type "E". These submarines were constructed under factory serial numbers 109, 110, 111. Takeing into account the novelty of construction in the contract they were not provided for sanction for the nonfulfillment of agreement conditions. The tests of the first submarine had to begin on 10 January, 1905, with the second and the third - during February and March of the same year. Then submarines had to be dismantled, transported by railroad into Russia and it is there newly assembled.

During August 1905 Russia forewent the railroad delivery of submarines and proposed to outdistance them into Libavu by sea. The production of boats was detained, tests began only during August 1905 and were completed in the summer of 1907 in the keel. During the building arose many misunderstandings between plant and representatives OF VMF of Russia, which especially reproached the firm of Krupp in the unwillingness to introduce those changes, which has already been accomplished on the submarine "U -1" the firm Of f. Krupp, referring to contract conditions, it rejected to assume the demands of Russian seamen and in spite of a number of observations, acceptance board under the management M.N. Beklemiwev was forced to accept submarines into the treasury.

Submarines of the type "carp" related to the polutorakorpusnomu type. Durable housing was divided by transverse sortings in 7 sections, which were connected together by bolts. The second and sixth sections were equipped with entrance ports. Above the fourth section was placed the durable room, which also had entrance port with respect to the durable housing room not was hermetically sealed, they were not checked in the airtightness and the sections of durable housing. In the lower part of the durable housing were placed four hinged keels, the construction of return of which proved to be very imperfect.

In the upper part of the housing full length of boat the superstructure, whose nose extremity had the characteristic elevated form, was placed, in the rear portion of the superstructure was placed the enclosure of gazovykhlopnoy pipe, which resembles small room; for the ventilation of intra-cutoff air and operational provisions of kerosinomotorov in the nose and rear portions were provided the being fallen air flues. In the superstructure the fuel stocks and oil and the cylinders of compressed air were placed.

Sinking- emersion system consisted of six ballast tanks inside the durable housing and seven of the lung, 3 of which in the nose section, 2 - in the stern and 2 - in the mezhbortnom space. Internal cisterns were located in the lower part of the durable housing in the region of battery sections and they were lungs, which excluded their insufflation by compressed air and they were dried by pumps.

Later, already in the Black sea, in 1909 due to the removal of 12 storage batteries one of the internal cisterns they altered under the cistern of high pressure, which substantially increased safety of boats. This alteration was executed on the submarines "carp" and "crucian". External cisterns were filled up with drift, and they were blown through by air. However, the time of filling of cisterns was large and, once in Russia, the system of filling it was necessary to alter, to change steel framework. For the ballast trimming was provided only one nose trim cistern, which led to a number of inconveniences with the operation. For an increase in the buoyancy the free space between the light and durable housings was filled up with the plug, which in the process of operation swelled, its specific weight became substantially more than computed value, as a result of which the boat acquired negative buoyancy.

Nesovershenna was and electromechanical installation - storage battery not was equipped with ventilation system, as the main engines of above-water motion were used kerosinomotory. The characteristic property, from which the firm refused with the building of German boats, was the inclined arrangement of torpedo tube.
