Hello everyone. I’m new to the sub community and have just started playing my first sub sim. I've seen a lot of submarine movies (always been a fan of submarines and sub warfare). Though I haven’t read any books yet and have wanted to find a good one. I was wondering what some of you consider to be real good sub books. I generally prefer historical stories to fiction but I guess it really doesn’t matter. If you could give me your opinions I would be most grateful.

U-Boat 977, by Heinz Schaeffer. He tells his own experiences, including taking his boat from Germany to Argentina at the end of the war.

There are a lot of good ones out there, this one is just one place to start.

And welcome to SubSim.

Check the book section of uboat.net: plenty of choice.

A fictional, sad, tale I liked is "sharks and little fishes" by Ott.

In the non-fiction category Blind Man's Bluff was very good. Big Red is another good one if you'd like to "see" what life is like aboard a boomer.

The book that turned me on to U-Boats was 'Iron Coffins' by Herbert Werner. This is an autobiography.

U-Boats under the Swastika, By Jak. P. Mallman Showell
This book is a wealth of infrmation about U-Boats. Including a complete list of all u-boats commishioned and months of service and disposition. A huge library of pictures, and other information written by the son of a u-boat man, Diesel Obermachinist Jak Mallmann. He was on his 13th operational tour with U-377, in January 1944, when his boat was sunk by a German Torpedo. I hope this helped. Mike

I just re-read 'E. Blanchard Gasaway's 'Grey Wolf, Grey Sea'. It's pretty good, an appropriate 'break-in' for someone new to subs. Although you have to keep in mind that the Type IX boat featured was eventually sunk, so much of the information is either speculation or from former crew who were transferred off and managed to survive the war.

Just got
"The Last year of the Kriegsmarine May 1944-May 1945" by V.E.Tarrant from the library for £1.70, it looks a good read. Thumbs Up

Hostile Waters is good, as is Business in Great Waters (heavy reading though). 'Blind Man's Bluff' is a must read

Thumbs Up

We Dive at Dawn, Edwards, Lt. Cdr. K., 1941
Interesting look at British WWI sub missions in the Dardanelles and other theaters. No direct connection with the 1943 movie as I recall it.

Another great one by Bucheim is the coffeetable book
"UBOAT WAR" - Large format, not a lot of text, mainly the photos that he took onboard U-96 when he was a war correspondent -
He was "Lt Werner" more or less in the film.
