I am new to Submarine sims but i've read several Tom Clancey books that got me excited about these boats so i'm looking into it, but i havn't been able to find many demos out there. Ive skimmed most of the reviews on this site and the review for Sub command looked realy good, but is there some kind of demo for it out there? or since its old perhaps shareware/abandonware? I'm very interested but i don't like the idea of dropping money on a game that i might not even like. thank you very much |

exactly the game sounds interesting and only that......
Kiddin, if u don't mind with relatively substandard visual and only want to enjoy the gameplay (handling sonar, working on TMA, classification, etc) then t's the game for u. SC is really an old game (4 yrs if i'm not mistaken) so the price should already hit he rock bottom if they're still available.
Dangerous Waters the equel to SC is already out. Eye candy is improved and you can control surface and air platform not just subs..... |

There isn't a demo for Sub Command, but there is a demo for Dangerous Waters. The subs in DW are handled almost exactly like Sub Command. You can get the DW demo here:

okay, I decided to post in here again so that i don't clutter up your board. This game, Dangerous Waters looks REALY interesting, but its a little complicated for me, someone who has no experience with submarine simulators. I downloaded the tutorials from the company's website and watched them each several times but theres still a bit of confusion, and they are assuming i already know some things. there is also some lingo that i'm not falling into easily. although i plan on trying to master this sim, i'm wondering if any of you can reccomend something that is a little simpler, something newbie friendly, that i can start with and work my way up. or possible even a non-game reference. good graphics are not a requirement of mine, i just want to learn more about this subject. thank you muchly |

Sub Command? Essentially a sub-only version of DW. Also offers a mod (SCXII/SCU) which gives you most of the Cold War boats as playables. |

SC can be made fairly easy if you want to play it as such:
(1) You can turn on auto-crew (AI assistants) for the TMA (target tracking/plotting) and Sonar (detection/tracking).
(2) You can turn on SHOW TRUTH; meaning no fog of war - you get absolute knowledge of the enemy.
However, there aren't difficulty level options unlike other games.
---
As for subs, I have dabled with SC on and off. Recently, I have started playing some older WWII subsims: Aces of the Deep (U-boats), Silent Hunter I (USA subs against Japan), and Silent Hunter II with the Pacific Aces mod (USA subs against Japan).
I find these games more enjoyable on the whole. Why?
(1) Dynamic campaigns/campaign generator.
(2) Less hi-tech super weapons. You have to get in very close if you are going to try to kill anything.
(3) Lots of SC play doesn't revolve around combat. But combat in games is fun! The above sims are all about killing things without getting killed. Many engagements involve stealthy approaches, fast violent attacks, finally followed but nail biting evasion of escorts.
(4) More atomosphere.
Of course, SH3 (U-boats) has recently been released. It still perhaps needs more patching, modding, and there is the issue with Starforce copy protection (malware infection).
Also, you should know that the above mentioned WWII sims are highly configurable in terms of game play challenge options.
Finally, you should also note that SC is very much a simulation of Sonar/TMA along with command. But you don't get the feeling that the main focus is command. In the above mentioned WWII sims, the emphasis for the most part is on command. |

thats all part of command knowing your sensors you probably wont find a sub captain just sitting in the con saying right full ahead full etc... he probly will tour the submarine looking at the sensors and asking questions etc..
sub command is useful to wanna be submariners of the u.s navy and russian navy i think it will help build the know factor i mean i know its not 100% no simulator is and you cant beet the real thing but it gives the virtual submariners a little bit of encoragement and makes them feel as if they wasnt command one day i know i do ! |

Have you considered 688I Hunter-Killer? I suppose its similar in complexity to SC, but it's how I got my start.
Only one sub to learn. |

RogueCode,
There are PDF files in the Demo that explain various features and the platforms that are included in the demo:
- Welcome to DW
- NAV Station
- MH-60 Overview
- Kilo Overview
- Voice Commands reference Also, there are many excellent community generated references that are applicable to DW and SC and also very interesting "reads" in general (the TacMan is one of my favorites):
Good luck! I hope you eventually decide to buy DW, and if you need any convincing I'd be happy to help! |
