is this cool or what?

Looks cool, but the technology is not cool (did you notice the weird radar mast on the tower?
).
I have this thing in my hobby room. You should bring good skills to make this model a really cool rc model.

One of my other RC Subs, the U-177 from Engel (http://www.engel-modellbau.de/catalog/index.php?cPath=3_11&osCsid=1959d3d5092d641c11a6103bc1a7b6ad)
comes with diving tanks out of the box. Thats cool, but it's also about 2 meters long. Not so funny to transport it. Wink

Phew nevermind the 300.00 price tag. Did you see the list of "accesories" needed ?

Ive seen cheap toy subs in the Swimming Pool stores. Wonder how you control them once their submerged ?

Radio waves are able to penetrate about 6-8" of water. With a normal RC sub you have an antenna that stays above the surface and you're limited to periscope depth. They're normally designed to keep a bit of positive bouyancy so they float up if they lose the control signal. More elaborate ones have a circut that runs the forward dive planes to surface if it loses a signal.
Seals for the drive motors and dive planes tend to be minimal and the model could only handle being submerged 3-5' before you'd need to worry about leakage.

With the little fishtank models, the radio penetrates the glass and water. I don't think I'd subject my pet fish to the motor noise from one of those though.

Here's a link for a great site on RC submarines:

The Subguide is particularly interesting.

Another cool link of an RC sub with some pics of the interior:

And for people who want something a bit bigger to play with:

The K250's and K350's are popular. Smile

Here's another link I came across with a RC U-boat model. Some nice pics of the internals.

And, if you want to own something a bit bigger:

The K-250's and K-350's are the most popular.

I fly RC-airplanes and heli's, and know a few people who do the RC-sub. I have always wanted to make ones from scratch like they do, but its always modern submarines they make. While you can purchase kits for WWII models, if you made if from scratch you can add all the goodies. The one guy I know has functional torpedoes which fire underwater, as well as a few mock ICBMs which he can launch about 100 feet into the air while at "launching depth" or 1 ft under the water.

It's quite a spectacle to see Very Happy

There are actually official competitions between RC airplanes and Subs. The airplanes drop essentially what equates to a DC, and the subs fire their Missiles into the air to hit them. Also a ton of fun to watch, though I've never seen one live.

And answering the other question: The really really nice RC-subs navigate underwater with a closed circuit camera on the conning tower which broadcasts to a 5 inch screen.

(starts drooling just thinking about them.... I should start one :hmm: )

Insanely functional Type XXI

Just saw this XXI: http://home.planet.nl/~oldeh030/

It's scratch built, has got foldable dive planes, working torpedo tube doors, torp launcher and retractable periscope/snorkel.

Some people just have too much time on their hands. Others have too much skill. Obviously, some have both.

Out of the box... built 'as is' it's not too bad. But it's a static diver (no balast tanks)

A riced up version like what I'm building will cost you in exess of $1000USD easy. Mine is teetering on $2000 right now.

For that kind of cash you can build an ROV that will go down 100' with a camera. Won't LOOK like a u-boat, but some people would say more practical. Smile
