Almost certainly you are running into a mine - generally, these mods that add minefields to friendly ports also provide you with an escorting destroyer/patrol boat of some kind which, if you follow it out of the harbor, will get you safely past the minefields - this is kinda fun the first couple of times, but does tend to get old after a while depending on which port you are in and how long it takes you to get past the minefields - many of these port traffic mods have versions or mini-mods that remove the minefields from friendly ports, in case you'd rather not bother with them

Can anyone confirm if this is also in IUB? Are there maps of the fields? How do you know which ship is the escort?

Mines are also in IUB. It is a feature of the Harbor Traffic mod, which uses mines at the base entrances.

As soon as you start the patrol your bridge crew usually notes a ship spotted - the very first ship you see is your guide - usually a trawler of some sort. Follow it - and you should avoid the mines with no problem. Good Hunting.

First time I load Harbour Traffic I was plotting a course out off port in the nav screen when I hear a crash sound, when I reach the bridge I saw I was ramming it. Rotfl Rotfl

Since then I always leave port at less than 5 knts.

Lock your UZO onto the escort. Match his speed. When he turns don't bother to follow him manually; wait until you are directly astern of him and hit the '+/=' key. That way you will follow his path exactly and always be the same distance behind him.

Harbours aren't the only place where you can hit those things. It was pure good luck that I didn't hit this sucker with my brand new XXI, which was already attacked by aircraft and also depth charged and rammed by destroyer in heavy fog.

This shows the passage between the Faroes and Scotland. It was mined by the British in 1940-41. If you are using RUB then the mines are there, placed originally by me for the Ops Mod, later corrected and updated by Teddy Bar for RUB and his new mod.

Use the mission editor to look at the map and you'll see where all the mines are.

Go here billk..... http://u-boot.realsimulation.com/ then click on SHIII Downloads on the left. Then click I Understand and Agree in the next screen and go to Silent Hunter 3 Mods (General Section). HT 1.47 is the latest one. There is one for RUB and a Standalone version.
