Here is a seafaring game concept…
What about a Whaling sim using the same engine and graphics as SHIII but you are Capt. of an 1830-1850’s Whaling rig and crew.
You take command of a small ship first and a crew.. have to find the Whales and then get as many as you can.. process them at sea and fill barrels of oil… try to make it back to port and sell them.
Money and fame can be used to upgrade your ship, get a bigger one, pay crews and upgrade whaleboats and harpoons (and bouts ‘o ale in the port taverns for morale).
The gramophone would be replaced by “Have crew sing for morale” and filled with mp3’s of old whaling songs.
If you get too reckless and/or greedy, crewmen can be lost or killed at sea... making it hard to return to port or even continue the hunt.
Also, be able to step into the whaleboat (sea-level graphics like SHIII), oar out to the whales and use the harpoon... then hang on for one heck-of-a-ride... and risk your own virtual life at times.
Sound fun??
I think it would be way cool especially if the sea interacted like SHIII and basically the same concept as a sub sim but an economic maritime thriller/adventure..
Sub sim..
1. go out and hunt down big merchant ships and sink them
2. danger from air and war ships trying to kill you
3. make it back home
4. rewarded with scores for tunnage and reputation for boat upgrades
5. do it again
Whaler sim..
1. go out and hunt down great whales and harvest them
2. danger in whales smacking the boats and crew losses.. danger in the sea from storms
3. make it back home
4. rewarded with selling much oil. using the funds and fame to pay for better crew and better ship/boats and other things.
5. do it again

Without some kind of conflict where the opponent can fight back at an
inferior, equal or greater level, players would tire of it too fast...
