Blair's books are pretty good, but they're loaded down with dry statistics that don't really show the whole story. Human emotions play a major part in any history and without it being considered is to miss out on many important parts of the war efforts.
My personal recommendation is "Battle of the Atlantic" by Hughes & Costello ...excellent book that covers the human, political as well as the actual combat. But no ONE book can do justice to something as major an event as the battle for the Atlantic ...it's best to read many and get the best overview possible. Bias accounts are written from both/all sides on most any event in history ...be careful of making judgements based on only one accounting of any historical event.

Try and get the novel "Das Boot" by L.G. Buchheim (yep, itīs the one the film is based upon. I know itīs available in English, but I donīt know if they changed the title ("The Boat" may sound a bit strange...).
There are also GREAT photo-books by Buchheim, not sure if you can get them in English, but I highly recommend "Die U-Bootfahrer" or "Zu Tode gesiegt" (literally translated: The U-Boat men/ Victorious to death, which is a sarcastic allusion to the futility of late U-boat war)
Even if you canīt get them in English, Iīd recommend them, because they are full of great photos, most of them never seen elsewhere, e.g. a "life-photo series" of a depth charge inside U-96.

Speaking of novels, I'd suggest Ott's "Sharks and little fishes" too.
It's an hard tale about the career of some german seekadetts, ending with their patrols on a u-boat.
But, am I wrong or wasn't this topic about historical books? |
