WHat was that guy drinking in Das Boot?

What was the red haired decryption officer drinking in das boot when he said "cocktail,...jelous?" it didnt look to good and by the expressions on the capt and officers faces they didnt think so either.

Servus Luis,

he is drinking a "U-Boot Spezial Cocktail" = U-boat special cocktail.

He mixed evaporated milk with lemon juice!!!.

But all the others around eat their lemons in different way too.

They also used to have a supply of fruit juices - usually apple juice. Apple juice was used instead of freshwater for drinking purposes as the freshwater (fresh!? - actually desalinized ocean water) was used for cooking. Some boat used to have beer (Das Boot) and or Schnapps, yet some captains (Luth for example) did not allow any alcohol on board.

Alcohol was usually reserved for celebrations, in particular celebrating an important sinking or returning to port after a successful patrol. Even then, it was very heavily rationed.

Das Boot shows the men drinking Beck's beer at one point, but a lot of people make the mistake of thinking that the apple juice you see them drinking elsewhere in the film is beer too. It looks like beer, but it's not. Bruno's right - apple juice was the staple, but it wasn't just used to save on water (they could have drunk bottled water, after all) - it was also issued for its vitamin content, same as the lemons that helped to make up a "U-boat Cocktail".

I always thought apples were a North American crop. where were the Germans getting thier apple juice from during the war? Are apples grown in Europe? :hmm:

I live near the town Jork, the capital of the "Altes Land" or called "The garden of Germany", this area here is the largest apple fruit growing area in Europe.

The two great subpens ELBE II and FINK II were only 15 km away from the apple fruit industry in Jork.

Thanks guys. I know I could of done a simple search but when I thought of Europe and fruit I could only think of grapes (wine), tomatoes (Italia) and figs. :8 Cool

I did it! I did it!

I went and drank a U-Boat Special! What was it like? Like sweetened lemonade concentrate. Gives you a heck of a thirst. Make sure you have several glasses of water handy as chaser.

Seriously, I had the cocktail after eating something, so as not to take chances. I didn't have to hit the throne, but there were a few disturbing rumblings, and the whole day something just didn't suit right, like having ice cubes in your guts that never thawed.

In fact in Das boot chief is drinking apple juice after exhausting repairs.
I remember it clearly because i first thinked it was beer but then i saw the label in bottle.
