UPDATE NOTE: The newest mods are always on the top areas of each mod-type.
Also of interest, is the fact that some browsers don't support Subsim's Forums new address format (http://subsim.com/). I try to correct all these addreses with the old http://www.subsim.com/ , but I may forget some, so, if you see any address with the first format and have problems, just add the www.
HINT FOR NOT WORKING LINKS: If you notice that a link for some mod isn't working, try to search it in some of the Mod Download Websites, of which there's a list just a few lines below. If you still don't find a valid link, send a mail to the author of the mod, or PM me, but please, don't resurrect old threads if there's no need to do so.

How to rid of the "game paused" text so you can get some good screenshots?
Go into your "Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Menu\" directory and open up the file in there called "en_menu.txt" (assuming of course you are using the English version) and at line 90 you will see the "game paused" string. Delete the text but leave the bit that says "90=", save the file and thats it, no more game paused text in game.
There is also another solution in case you don't need the controls in the screenshot. Press Num Del and the whole interface from the game, including the pause message will be hidden. You will be able to take clean screenshot.
The intro movies are great, but I don't need to see them anymore
Simply delete the two files from the "Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Movies\Intro\" directory.

Simply delete the associated graphics file. It is located at "Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Misc\UMark.tga". Be sure to make a backup first, or simply rename the file.

That's an awesome idea, mouse. You would be a hero to neophytes like myself who see a great value in modding for certain features, but who also forsee complete entanglement when writing one over another. On the other hand, I wonder how many of these mods will be addressed in the v1.3 patch from Ubisoft. If they come out with 1.3 soon, that might invalidate a lot of your hard work, and I'd hate to see that happen. Just for the sake of argument, which of these mods would you (at this time) deem for inclusion in your idea of an selection installer? |

The problem is, a lot of mods alter the same game files. For instance you can't have the Flotilla realism mod and the Campaign1_1 escorts fix both loaded because they both alter the flotilla.dat file in different ways. Now I believe that these two mods 'can' work together if you load the escort fix first and then the Flotilla mod, but I'm not sure on that. Other mods, like (I believe) the Sperrbrecher mod and the 20% traffic mod are completely incompatible - you can have one or the other, but not both - installing the one will remove the other. An installer would not help people get both these mods because a combined version isn't available yet.
This is why I think it's important, every now and then, for people to get together and release 'supermods' which combine mods so that people can download one single mod (which includes a 'best of' selection of smaller mods) to suit their playstyle. It makes things simpler all around. The SH3 mod team just released such a mod - focused on realism - to Subsim downloads. Hopefully it should appear today or tomorrow. |

Something similar to mouseno4's suggestion had also been made by my friend Capt.Perez on a separate thread.
Below is his idea:
Thanks for taking the lead on this one, Beery. The influx of mods is a great thing but it does not make sense to have it all so disorganized.
Why not try it this way?
Package mods into logical, content-selectable groups. When installing a "mod group," the user would get a dialog box with little radio buttons for each mod contained. Maybe a second set of buttons, when clicked, would give the user a brief description of what the individual mod is, what it does and what files it changes. In this way, a user could select whichever mods he or she wants out of the grouping. If you wanted to get really fancy, there could be uninstall buttons...
Suggested groupings:
"Appearance Package"
Purpose: Graphical improvement
Includes: Dress-ups and fixes for appearance, like sub interior mods, gauge faces, the moon mod, atlantic waters, crew uniforms, etc.
"Technical Improvement Package"
Purpose: Make the simulator more realistic in the technical sense
Includes: Crush depth mod, compass reading fix, flotilla fix, traffic modifiers, sonar sound mod, that kind of thing.
"Captain's Aid Package"
Purpose: Make managing the simulator easier
Includes: Navigational tool additions, changes to the Recognition Manual such as the full vulnerability mod, bearing finders, the map with convoy routes depicted, etc.
And, finally,
"Might Be Politically Incorrect Package"
Purpose: To add those aspects of historical realism that SH3 left out, which might have some "emotional impact"
Includes: Swastika mod and as-yet nonexistent but possible additions to the mod library such as lifeboats/men in the water, realistic career impact for sinking the "wrong" targets, etc.
I know I might get flamed for the last grouping, but please consider that putting such realism into a sim is nothing new. Check out the screams from pilots going down on fire in "Pacific Fighters," for example. That's enough to give one nightmares, and it effectively removes any notion of "arcade" from that excellent sim. I think SH3 deserves the same level of historical accuracy (optional to install, of course).
Good luck with the effort, Beery, and thanks again for undertaking that challenge. The SH3 community will applaud the effort!

Hi all,
Long time listener, first time caller...
I'm a software developer and developed a little tool for managing EAW mods. With a little tweak I got it going for SHIII. Image here...
It works the same as the PanzerElite Mod Enabler. It lets you enable or disable mods as you wish, backing up all files with the mod's name prior to updating to maintain version control.
It's only ever been just for me, so it's not the most polished, but it has never let me down. The only difference in using it is that instead of unzipping mod files straight into your SHIII structure, you unzip into the MOD folder (but still in the correct folder structure) and the mod enabler picks the mod up. Enabling simply copies across into the SHIII folder structure backing up as it goes. Simple but effective. The labels in the above image are actually the folder names I created under the MOD folder to keep the mods separate.
If someone is interested in having a play, let me know. I'll upload it with some instructions and you can let me know what you think. Obviously, if people like it and start zipping their mods to support it, it will become even more user friendly.
BTW, the first mod in the list is my own creation - I got sick of reading the ranks in English so I updated the menu .txt file so the ranks are displayed in German. The other mods are what I d/l from you guys
