"Das Boot" both the movie and book are far and away, in a league of their own.
Actually, like the rest of you, I cannot get enough of the submarine genre period. |

What about the victims? An excellent book is the "Cruel Sea" by Monsarrat. Set in the Second World War, two ships and their crews of about a hundred and fifty men are involved in defending Atlantic convoys against impossible odds. Of course these odds were below the surface of the ocean.
"... With the publication of his classic, The Cruel Sea, he became one of the most successful novelists of the twentieth century, whose rich and varied collection bears the hallmark of a truly gifted writer.".
Excellently written. One of my favorites!! |

Have you ever red 'Run Silent, Run Deep'? This is the book that is in a league on it's own. It's really better than 'Das Boot'! |

No I didnot. I will look for that book (Edward L.Beach). They do have the Dvd in the library. But books are usually better. I did read 'Das Boot' and the Dvd is right here at me desk. Did you read the Cruel Sea? |

I should (and will) get it,
Bu you should read 'Run Silent, Run Deep'. Written by a real professional, it gives an insight of the sub war in the Pacific in all it's aspects.

I have seen both movies and read Das Boot. Das Boot is the best movie with it`s anti war message although Run Silent Run Deep is nice entertainment as well. |

I agree that both are great novels and movies of the sea during the war. Another comes to mind..."The Enemy Below"... it's very hard to make comparisons.
Gentlemen, Hats off to all the survivors!
Good hunt. |

I haven't read these books yet, but have watched them on video.
If anything, I like "fukaku shizukani senkou seyo"(Run Silent, Run Deep).
Because it deals with the Pasific War especially describes a recon by sub around Bungo Suido and furthermore this movie has more exciting scenes than Das Boot like "RAIGEKI"(torpedo attack). Of course, Das Boot is a wonderful movie but serious a little bit and it turns my feeling gloomy after watching it....
By the way, I have been wondering....who is "Bungo Pete" in Run Silent, Run Deep?? :hmm: |

In the book: Captain Tatao Nakame IJN. Running ASW operations in the Bungo Suido. Sailing himself on a modified Akikaze destroyer.....
By the way, the book is much better then the movie! |

I`m not sure if these two books can be compared. Das Boot is not a diary nor a book written by a submarine commander, it is intended more to give general feeling of how the U-Boot service looked like. If you read carefully you may notice it`s late 1941 but some phrazes refer to later events.
And first of all it is a great novel.
Run silent run deep is not the same mainly because it describes the service from another point of view - a commander`s point of view, not a Marinekreigsberichter. Let me say, probably the Old from Das Boot would have written Run Silent, Run Deep, so to say. |

Not really sub relasted but: 'The Greatest Enemy' by Douglas Reman/raeman (cant remember spelling) novel about surface German raiders - really good.
Gotta be 'Das Boot' for me in the poll though.
Also: ' A Twist of Sand' - can't remember author, but a good little book none the less, an entertaining read.
'Submarine!' - (E L Beech I think) was good too.
'Go in and Sink!' - more U-boat tales
'With Blood and Iron' short novel about U-boat war. |
