When computing navigational times/distances are maritime speeds(knots) basically nautical miles per hour?

I find it helpful to use the 3 minute rule. Speed in kts x100=distance travelled in 3 minutes in yards.
At
5kts you will go 500yds in 3 minutes
7kts=700yds
10kts=1000yds
25kts=25yds

Thanks again for the reply Rip. I was posing the question primarily for long transit purposes. I was (and still do) use the 3 minute rule for shorter distances but found that trying to use it for longer distances was very cumbersome.

Roger, and that is fairly easy. 2000yds is a NM. As long as you don't need mph or kph etc it is easy. Now meters and feet is a pain. It is wise to chose depths that are not even increments of your opponents system. For instance I never travel at 500 ft because it is too neat 150 meters.
