Here's one for the sub vets out there. Are tactics any different when trying to avoid aircraft? I'm working on the TLAM strike mission and it seems like everything I do they still nail me. |

I hear, on good authority, that the best tactic is to surface and shoot them down with your trusty shoulder-launched SAM. |

Thanks Bill! I think I've got to wait for DW to do that. Seriously though, I am curious as to whether or not there are different tactics. |

I have to agree with Bill
Works for me - but not so well for a P3 and a Helo
Deep and slow is always another option though |

As I recall, you were killed in the DW simulation involving SAMs, weren't you Ramius (although I admit, I seem to remember something about you taking out a P-3 before getting killed)? |

No, Ramius was the gun-slinging cowboy screaming yeehaa from the bridge of his sub as he showed those flyboys that their aircraft can become submarines as well |

Yep JSLTIGER a helo snuck up on him and torped him after he took out a P-3.
Ramius in a prevous mission you took out both Tim's SH-60 and the P-3? |

Was he taking shots at the P-3 with his .45 as it strafed him ALA Patton? |

Before I had SCX and I was doing the campaign missions, I started getting picked off by an MPA while sneaking into a harbor. I passed the mission on my (i think) third attempt by *gasp* staying as deep as possible! I was actually pretty impressed, because it seemed that the MPA picked me up visually! (I had been trying to classify ships by periscope since all the NB sigs overlapped).
I could be wrong though, its just a theory. In any case, that won't save you from the crudely modeled sonabouys.
In the case of choppers, you can mark their active sonar and get a feel for their patrol area...but planes seem like its pretty much just luck to me. Sorry. |

I suspect I know the reason - or at least part of it. Being a submarine, it may be that ASMs cannot lock onto him (a player certainly cannot target him with it, see the Orions report), and that torpedoes might not have the range to kick his butt from outside his SAM range.
The obvious fix is to allow surface-targeters to target surfaced subs too. (Or have them all capable of attacking subs all the time, which would make sure you couldn't "esp" if he was on the surface.)
The SAMs should be a "popup-here-I-am-BOOM" weapon, rather than an air superiority weapon... |
