Great stuff... Thumbs Up

But it ends abruptly on page 4, in midst of the action, why? Perhaps additional pages will be forthcoming...

Also, I'd be interested to hear about techinicalities behind the game, like, what connections did the players use to play the game (broadband, what speed?, modems?), possible connection problems, link drops, net lag (if any), etc.

Preview itself seems like fun.

O.

Ramius evidently also used his radar. Even calling it AN/APS 137 although he was in a kilo.

But surfacing was a big mistake - he even got sunk for it.

Just goes to show that rule#1, 2 and 3 of submarine warfare is "Don't make a mistake"

That was a misinterpretation. What he meant is that he got a ESM contact with a AN/APS 137.

Your also wrong about the rules.

Rule #1 - Dont be detected

Rule #2 - Never Surface, unless in extreme circumstances (like being forced to return to port)

Rule #3 - Kill the other guy before he can let any weapons loose on you.

which is sometimes pretty hairy if you're facing a diesel or some air contact with some bad fishes on board Wink

I applaud Ramius's bold play. And he downed a P3 with his SAMs! How great is that? Now, maybe a lot of luck and foolishness was involved, but it probably felt pretty nice. Better than sitting in a 4nm box for 2 hours because you can only make a few knots, in my opinion.

It seems like the battery charging may be more important than I'd expect if he was conserving it -- I wonder if it's something you'd need to do at least once during a 2 hour mission? And the link sounds like quite a deadly asset. Bill's skill, especially considering that he was monitored temporarily on sonobuoy, probably isn't adequately captured in the article.

See my explination on the BF forums Wink

Also. I assume you mean 4x4 nmi, giving a area of 16 nmiČ. It is all very well that you are in such a box, but the P-3 thats searching for you has to figure out which 16 nmiČ you are in out of the 360 000 nmiČ that you could be in... I assume he will run out of buoys a lot quicker than he will find you...

It ends on page 4. They do not have a long debriefing for us, which I don't think we really needed. It's wrapped up in the "I search fruitlessly and witness the carnage Bill wreaks on the defenseless convoy."

One thing I would have liked in that regard, was a 'show truth' picture of the replay, at different points in the battle. Alongside the text, preferrably.

Most of the pictures there aren't even from their game...

I wonder... can they save replays, and we import them in sub commands' replay viewer?

I'd like to hear that from him. The orion also went to search out some esm contact, if I read it right. Plus, the AN/APS-137 radar is made by raytheon, and it's not very likely you'll find it on a kilo.

Those could belong to "how to know what is a mistake" if paired with what I said...

Hi

During the MP game, the P-3 Orion player was unable to fire the Maverick missiles at the surfaced submarine? Is that intentional? Was it a bug? Or was it an error of the player?

Regards,
Antonio

Ok, there seems to be some bogus tactics being used here, or Probably just some things to make matters go faster.

Some key issues I would like to see from this personally are the following.
Time compression- Does it work on all players or is it possible? Some battles will take hours on end if not.
The maverick launch- this was stated that he tried to lock it at 25nm, is this correct. No maveric missle has that range nor the capability ot lock at that range. Now, a Harpoon is a different animal. I wonder if a Harpoon could hit the sail of a submarine? To my understanding to launch a maveric (TV guided, or IR ), you need visual contact with the target to designate it. I think it will be safe to say that flying within 2 miles of any surfaced sub will be a mistake, but if you should be able to launch outside that range. Not 25 miles though. Then again, picking up the sub visually beyond that range will be tough too. Doesnt the P3 have IR cameras?

The next tactical problem I see is charging the contact too quickly. If you have him on radar, then you can plot some probable courses ( based on his position and respective mission and luck ), and while doing so, asap the Helo to the Radar Datum (keep him EMCOM til relativly close to datum ). Careful bouy use and patience. The p3 could still be covering more ground searching for the other baddies out there.

What types of buoys are being dropped. Some active evidently. Wouldnt it better to lay a picket line of passive and save the actives for prosecution of contact?

this review makes me want to play the game so bad, but does leave a few questions unanswered.

I really want to take the time to thank the guys for doing this much. Hell, if it works as it should, being pulled away from the game in the first place is probably hell on them.

Thanks guys, and if you have the time, let us know some more details!

Chip

Well if you lay down a line of Actives (with a few Passives) in an area you can force the enemy submarine to go around the line. If the sub can't attack then you've won even tho you didn't kill the sub.

True indeed. The best way to win at Chess is forcing moves on the other player.

Preventing an avenue of approach is valid.

I just want more !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And I cant wait to play multiplayer. My wife is gonna hate me, but she will live.
