I second that emotion! I guess the question really is.....Is that RL or just Hollywood? If it's just Hollywood (which is my suspicion) then forget it. |

I've never served on subs, I'm actually in the Army, and serve as a Bradley gunner. Now how I got into subs is beyond me..
Anyway, I've heard "quick quiet" in movies and read about it in books. From what I gather, the skipper orders a "quick quiet", and engineering cuts all the systems back except what is necessary to operate the ship. Basically cutting the reactor back to reduce the plant noise. Activities like mess and other non-combat operations cease until the "secure from quiet" order is issued. Again, it may just be hollywood, I'm not sure |

I spent a few years on an LA Class and at least then it was called Rig for Silent Running. Nothing quick about it, we would enter this mode often when tracking.
During this time noise making activities are minimized, certain activities begin to require OOD/CO permission, and some hatches that might normally remain closed shift to remaining open. God save the idiot that starts a bilge pump and has sonar notifying the CO that there is a strong ownship noise and having to track it down. Quick route to the ol shitlist! |

I know for surface ships, we have a "Quiet Ship Bill" and we "Rig for Quiet Ship" and then there are zones on the the Bill that people have to check to make sure that equipment is properly aligned for quiet ship ie.
Align Prairie Air (Air Bubbles that come out the screw to reduce cavitation noise)
Align Masker air (Air Bubbles that come out of the hull of the ship around engineering spaces to reduce engineering noise)
Secure one LPAC if two are running.
Secure one Deisel Generator if two are running.
Secure Active Sonar.
Deploy Towed Array.
There are a variety of other equipment changes that take place to reduce the noise level of a ship, I would imagine it is something similar to a sub. But subs require the sailors to stop talking, ships don't have to worry about that.

We have two quiet states, Sonar Quiet and Ultra Quiet. The first is essentially what you illustrated, but Ultra is a real pain - it includes no use of heads except in an emergency (and no flushing, period), no showers, no TV, etc. In fact, if you are not on watch, you are to be in your rack. We have a roundsman from the sonar section who checks to ensure everyone is comlying. Obviously, we can't maintain Ultra for more than a few hours. |

Ultra Quiet... yes, that brings back memories....
As long as it wasn't your watch, it wasn't so bad.. unless you had to answer nature calling... |

hehehe, I hope that "ultra silent mode" doesn't take much long to be cancelled... the nature may call you even during this moments... :hmm:

I always found the bilges in the Engine Room more to my liking. My way of leveling the tables with the push button nukes:) |
