Although it's probably an advantage when issuing voice commands. Can't tell you how irritating it is to issue a voice command for a depth change and have the AI respond "SURFACE, SURFACE!" |
Gaming advantage! Sure there is, no kids no wife, no nois from the neighbours. Its just you and the ocean. \ |
On the other hand, the casual listener (wife, GF, neighbours, impressionable young children) will hear your loudly spoken orders answered if you use speakers instead of headphones, which'll somewhat lessen the unfavorable psychological assesment said listener will have of you
(Or, at least, I like to think it does ) |

You can hear a lot more with headphones. I have a 5.1 surround setup, but if I need to hear minor details (or continue searching the depths when everyone else is in bed ), I use a set of Koss headphones (decent qual., decent price). In many games, I find a set of stereo headphones+EAX better than a Dolby surround system

Michiel, that's something I don't need to worry about. Everyone in my household already knows how unstable I am..... :8
Biggoggs, so you prefer stereo cans to 5.1 cans? That's nice to know since I've been trying to decide which way to go. I've already decided to get a set of headphones w/mike (thanks in no small measure to all of you who have responded to my original post) so now it's simply a question of which ones to get. The search continues..........
Even if there's no sonar listening advantage to having a set at least I'll look the part.

Well, `prefer' is objective. When browsing the net I still have music playing through them, and they're good for DVDs and most games (without becoming uncomfortable like headphones tend to do over long periods). What sort of room you're in needs to be taken into consideration though- you need to be as close to the centre of the room as possible. Closed-off headphones allow you to hear more and block out external sound- you could be playing music through them and notice details you couldn't hear through speakers.
And yes, 5.1 speakers + distance between speakers + computer noise (a 6-fan server 5m behind me) + noise from other rooms probably isn't the ideal 5.1 setup, but for games strongly relying on audio, I'd get some decent closed-off headphones. If you have `spectators' you'd obviously need speakers, but if you show your sig. other/family that you can give voice commands, they might not think you crazy talking into a mic. wearing headphones.

Well gang I've made the plunge!!! Sennheiser PC 155's. They will be here early next week. Like Fish said earlier in this post.........it'll just be me and the ocean........and all those other subs out there that seem to get the best of me. Sure wish this game was a combination of listening and watching instead of just watching....... |

Just a comment on "listening" -- you could discriminate very basic classes in 688(i) and, of course, Sub Command (easier in SC, actually, to pick out those spooky nuke subs).
But, in 688(i) you could also estimate speed of contact from the sound. Especially great for listening to subs or torps. I don't think you could do this in SC, but I hope it makes it back into DW.
I liked using my aviation headsets. Great for keeping out noise, but after some time the pressure on my glasses can get irritating. The frequency response isn't as great as music or gaming headphones, though. |

I'm with you! I too hope the "listening" part makes it into DW. |

I hope some one will made a mod with more bio, like dolfins, new whales etcerera, also sound from earthquakes and oil and gas drilling.
Mission designers can implement them in new missions.
Now its always that same whale and shrimp to listen at in long missions. |
