Posted: Thu Mar 04, 2004 10:29 pm Post subject: How do you install PA without deleting existing SHII? |
|
|
I currently have SH2 installed and fully modded. I want to have a seperate installation of PA without deleting or overwriting SH2 so I can play both games.
I have read on the forum that you can have a seperate installation of PA without having to uninstall or overwrite SH2. But no instructions are given how to do this.
When I try to do this I run into a major problem. Since SH2 is already installed, when I insert the SH2 disk to begin a second install of SH2 for PA, a menu pops up only allowing me to uninstall SH2. It does not give me an option to install SH2.
Can anyone give me instructions on how to install PA without deleting my SH2 install so I can play both games?
Thanks for any help.

Ruzbasan,
Hope this helps.......
(Start with a clean install of SHII).........
1. Create a new "folder" on your system ...name it "Pacific Aces" or whatever you want to call it ...(anything other than "Silent Hunter II")
IE: C:\ProgramFiles\Pacific Aces
2. Copy ALL of your existing Silent Hunter II files, folders, patches, etc. to the new folder that you created in step #1.
3. Copy the Silent Hunter II Icon from your desktop...paste it to your desktop and rename it to match the folder you made in step #1. Right click the icon, select "properties" and change the target to go to the "exe" file in the folder that you created in step #1.
4. Go to Add/Remove programs in Control Panel and uninstall Silent Hunter II.
5. Check to make sure that your original Silent Hunter II folder has been deleted....if not....delete it.
6. Run scandisk and defrag
7. Reboot system
8. Install Silent Hunter II (make sure to specify a different folder than the one you created in step #1)...the game default should be fine for most systems.
9. Install v1.1 interop patch
10. Install Project Messerwetzer v1.02 patch
You will now have two versions of the game.... |

Or you could simply do what I did:
Cut and paste the entire SH2 map somewhere else on your HD. I put the entire SSI map in 'my documents'
Then install PA in the 'default' place (as the game suggest @ autorun/install) .
Both games work okay here. |

As I understand this:
1) You have a fully modded SH2 install you would like to keep.
2) You want to play PA too.
The reason you are unable to install a second version of SH2 if because the SH2 installer checks the registry for SH2.
If it can find SH2 installed, it will not allow you to install it again.
Workaround:
1)Backup the registry keys conserning SH2.
2)Delete the keys.
3)You should now be able to install SH2 to a new location.
(I suggest you keep a copy of a clean install)
4)Restore the keys
5)Install PA to the new SH2 folder. |

I never had to do this. The way I do it is.... I loaded SH2 then the official patch then the PM I use. I then zipped the entire directory for SH2. Now you have a set of base files you can use over and over and extract them to whatever directory you want. The only issue I have come across is dealing with graphics. If one setup has highres and the other is does not then you have to keep switching back and forth in the graphics setup screen when you switch between your different version. If you keep both (or all your SH2 versions) the same screen resolution you will be ok. |

What you state asumes you have a clean SH2.
He doesnt.
Or am I wrong?
Is there someway other than deleting the registry files, to trick the SH2 installer into starting a 2. installation? |

Thanks for the quick answers everyone, you have a great game community here.
I found the following procedure on another post and it worked well:
1.rename the original SH2 folder to "Silent Hunter 2_orig"
2.Insert SH2 CD and select uninstall (nothing is removed, only reg keys)
3.Install SH2 and patch 1.1
4.Rename this installation into "Silent Hunter II Pacific Aces"
5.Rename "Silent Hunter 2_orig" to "Silent Hunter 2"
6.Install PA into "Silent Hunter 2 Pacific Aces"
It worked very well.
Thanks everyone for your info.

By the way, the above procedure was provided by a message on the forum from Seeadler.
Thanks Seeadler for the providing the install procedure above.

Hi folks
I do not know, if this is working for everyone. I simply copied the full contents of my SHII folder into another one with a different name, ran the exe file from Pacific Aces over the new folder and started the game from the exe file (SH2.exe in the shell subfolder). Everything seems to work fine ?
No fondling with registry. no deleting, no nothing except this ... |

I have PA installed over my original SH2.
However, now I'd like to reinstall SH2 (while keeping PA). How can I easily go about this?

Jut do it the other way.... rename PA, Unistall it (through the installer) and reinstall SH2 to a folder of your choice |

I've never had any problem just installing again into a different place. You don't need to rename or uninstall anything unless you run into problems. |

Thanks guys, but both ideas didn't seem to work, overwrote everything back to original SH2 (likely a misplaced file on my part).

Floater, can you be more specific?

I just renamed the "SSI" folder that had Pacific Aces installed in the program files folder to "Pacific Aces" Uninstalled through the control panel Add/Remove programs then opened and closed cdrom drive and reinstalled Silent Hunter 2 Then start Pacific Aces from the the shell or sim folder in it I don't remember which one has the proper shortcut. After installing there will be a new icon for SH2 on the desktop. |

Crash Dive,
Thanks, that did it.
The icon is in the shell folder. (renamed and placed on desk top)
