Topic says it all. I think the pacific "Silent Service" (which is where the name originated from) should at least be developed as an expansion pack. From the announcement text, it sounds like the program may be more of a game than a sim but let's keep our fingers crossed. I for one would like the see the original game reborn instead of another U-boat game. Who wants to play a Nazi...they lost but that's just my own feelings. My heart sank when I read "U-boat" again.

I want to play a Nazi, man... and I want to play a Japp too...
If they will succed with SH III even with U-Boats then they will not stop... for shure they will continue with Pacific... I don't think they miss the big picture... I think (or hope ) the work on this project is a calculated one. |

I'm right there with scrapser. My heart sank (like a U-boat holed with Hedgehogs) when I heard it was go'n to be a U-boat sim again and not the Silent Service. I enjoyed Aces of the Deep but the mission based play of SH2 really bum'd me out.
I want the good 'ol days back when we had Silent Service 1 & 2 and Silent Hunter 1. If someone would take the best ideas from Silent Service 2 and Silent Hunter 1 they WOULD have a WINNING game.
PLEASE MAKE A WW2 US SUB SIM SOMETIME SOON!!!!! |

Does not matter to me. I just want to get into any WWII sim with a good AI and go hunt. I too was a little hesitant when SH2 came out and I had to be a German U-Boat Commander. But after playing it since the first few days on the market, I have learned so much about the U-boat war that I'm glad it was published the way it was. |

To Scrapser,
I would expect the Pacific to come after this one. The developer in my opinion, would already have this planned. A petition is not going to make it happen quicker, or make them change thier mind now.
To Overkill,
You cannot judge a upcomming U-boat simulation by it's predecessor, regardless of the franchise name, especially as it is a different developer (not Ultimation) doing this game with a new game engine. Also we need to remember that these guys would have been watching and with any luck listening to what was being said in the SHII forums.
I would also like to see a Submarine simulation (Pacific), and I feel confident that it will quickly follow SHIII.
What I like about the U-boat campaign is the way that it starts off easier and gradually builds up the difficulties till just surving is not impossible but a great feat in itself. |

After the Happy Times U-Boat Sailors had a hard life... for me will be good if I'll survive the war. To be an U-Boat Commander will be a hard enough task, a challenge... that i hope to not fail in SHIII. |

Ubi Soft is a french company and we all know France is no longer popular in the US, why to hell should they now develop a pacfic sim which is wished from a majority by US consumers and in mind that since two years the largest sales market for PC games is in europe??? |

Please tell me Silent Hunter 3 won't be a simulation on French WWII submarine war (involving 3 subs during 2 weeks or something like that)
This is great news anywya, I don't care where it takes places and what nationality is involved, I just hope it will be realistic.
Otherwise I won't buy the game, SH2 was a real disappointement for me, past the first "graphics are sooo good" impression.
Why don't we make a petition to have SH3 as moddable as possible?
Thus you could have your pacific campaign, anybody could have its favorite realism settings, sounds & graphics could be improved, etc...
In general, out-of-the-box features cannot match fan work. Simple question of time.... The engine is needed, the rest should be moddable. |

Petitions are a good idea but I know one that works even better:
The Subsim Marketing Method
each of us buys a copy of SH3,
then each of us writes a respectful letter to Ubisoft's CEO, Yves Guillemot.
In the letter we describe our desire for a Pacific version of SH and we enclose the boxtop of SH3 (and SH1&2, if you have it).
We coordinate this mailing through the Subsim forum and Subsim Newletter (reaches 19,000 players) so that Mr. Guillemot recevives them all in the same week.
Now that would command attention and respect and could produce results far greater than another online petition. First, let's wait and see how SH3 plays out.
cheers

Come on, this is not politics! This is gameīs business....leave that political sense out. Thatīs good for the politicians, but not for us players. Subsim is a good way of teaching the political class how so many different people of different countries can join together and be friends, sharing a common hobby!

Game business is politics in France!
For this year the french government presented a worth millions assistance plan for the national game industry. With several million euro the state supports new projects of french computer game manufacturers this year. In addition the companies, if they develop in France can get simple tax exemptions. |

I don't think Ubi give a s**t on the actual political mood. If they want to succed they will give their best product to the community of subsims I don't think they care about the "God knows what..." Bush did or didn't . They make games not military campaings in Irak. |

I cut my teeth on Silent Service by MicroProse on a Commodore 64 way back in 1984! Where did the time go? The Amiga version and the first PC version never played as well but I bought them as I upgraded my computer and the new versions were released.
When Silent Hunter I came out, it was as if the original Silent Service was reborn and I still play it. I have WinXP and set up a dual boot computer so I could have Win98 and still be able to enjoy Silent Hunter I. So you can see, I'm pretty dedicated to the pacific theater and American boats.
I never bought Aces of the Deep or Silent Hunter II because I hate scripted missions and don't wish to play a German sinking American ships (just my preference). It makes sense that UbiSoft and whoever the developers are would focus on something closer to home. I can only hope they will recognize there's an American market for an American version of the sim.
I'm not going to gripe about it. It doesn't do any good and fosters ill feelings. I think the approach Neal recommends is probably the most we can do. It is interesting however about the "global sim" wording in the press release. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
