I'm doing some writing and I'm basing a character on Spiess. I'm mainly concerned when he died. As far as I can tell, he survived the war. |

Hi,
Johannes Spiess was a succesful writer after WWI. Concerning his Navy career he wrote:
"Sechs Jahre UBootfahrten" Berlin, Hobling, 1925. Translated to diferent idioms.
"Wir jagten Panzerkreuzer. Kriegsabenteuer eines U-Boot Offiziers" Berlin, Steiniger 1937 and also reprint in 1938. At the time a bestseller.
He also translated the Memories of Lord Jellicoe:
"Der UBoot Krieg, von Lord Jellicoe", übersetzt von Klt. a.D. Johannes Spiess, Berlin 1938.
and
"Lord Jellicoe`s Erinnerungen" Berlin 1938
If you are writing about Spiess, try to find all these books.
Easy to find the originalgerman issues at www.zvab.com
regards

I would suggest Raiders of the Deep, published in 1928. I bought an original edition in fair condition from Amazon.com Z shops and paid less than 20 bucks. |
