Mike,

Let me say that once again you confound this old 'bubblehead'. I will probably self-combust with excitement waiting for your subsim to be released. It cannot come too soon for me, i've grown bored with SH2 (even with all its mods and hacks, its still a bit of a dog), and SH3 looks like being a product more sutible for the X-Box than the PC. Please accept my gratitude and thanks for persisting with this project and i know it will be a winner!!

BTW, how are you getting on with your Nuke Subsim? My favourite era is the mid-cold war, when the USN deployed the first Permits. A favorite topic of mine is the Sonars and FCS systems used by the USN at the time. I'd love to see a cold war campaign (and even one which goes 'hot').

hey there Sniper... sorry for the delay in responding...

thanks for the encouragement... it is the people like you that i really hope i don't let down with this thing.

as for the follow-up version, i have expanded on it a bit, and now it will be a logical continuation from the initial release...

it will take you into the cold war era as subs transition from the types that fought the hot war, to those that opened up the cold war...

Tang Class sub gets a surface test for the second release of the sim

the subs for the US will be the fleet Guppy mods, the Tang class, and finally the world's first nuclear powered sub, the Nautilus will be available for you to skipper.

also... you will also be able to take command of Soviet subs for the period, the Whiskeys, and Zulu NATO designations.

while not as much combat as the original version set in WWII, this release will reflect the era of transition, when various experimental designs to to sea in an attempt to define the missions of the heightened cold war era between the US and USSR.

in addition to the new capabilities that the adoption of the snorkel afforded, the addition (by the Soviet side) of missile launching submarines and the race to develop effective tactics to detect and track them (by the US) will be the emphasis of this version.

i may (depending on workload) even include the Growler and Grayback class missile early cruise missile platforms, but don't hold me to this as the work for just a single sub has been more than i ever expected.

the third version will be the early fast attacks of both sides... and may include a completely larger scope to the operations due to the fact that it will undoubtedly be written in a more capapble 3d game engine.

but that is a few months away... lemme get back to work so that this thing can get the first release off the ground...

Very nice work Mike! I can't wait for the Cold War Era sims, I really want to walk around and dive those Russian boats!

Keep up the good work, and keep us informed.

Mike,

No worries about the delay Mike, i'll just have to wait for your games to come out. I'm sure you will try and implement this, but could i ask for the sonar model of this game to reflect 'proper' acoustics. By that i mean by the early cold war some sub sonars were able to get 'convergence zone' contatcs. Aswell , can we assume that we will see sonars such as the BQQ-3 Lofar analyser and BQS-6 actice/passive bow sphere modeled? Based on what you have shown us so far i can tell you are man for deatil so i hope your cold war subsim will reflect this. About the game itself, is there any chance that you could write a campaign that has actual fighting in it? Maybe the Cuban Missile crisis goes hot, maybe NATO and WarPac go head to head because of the 'Prague Spring'?, maybe the Soviets drop paratroops onto the Suez canal during the 1973 Yom Kippur war to stop Isreal over-running the Egyptian army?

i haven't forgotten you guys... i'm still plugging away...

the force is still with me, guiding me through the ways of the 3d shader programming gurus... not to easy be this stuff.

here's a shot from some shader testing i've done in DBPro...

close encounter of the uboat type... bow on at 200 meters

i'm really sorry it's taking so long... i should have never seen DOOM3, or some of those shots from SH3 and PTBoats...

i'm getting there though, but there's still quite a bit to do... i'll keep you advised of any significant developments...

i really am trying to have something out before the holidays... but please don't quote me on that.

i gotta keep those options open Steve Cool

anyway, here's something to keep the faithfull warm as they wait...

2 short (less than a meg) videos from the conning tower sonar station...

the first is the echo sounder detecting a submerged obstruction ahead...

http://home.att.net/~mikey102/EchoSounder.wmv

the second is the listening sonar searching the area for a possible surface contact...

http://home.att.net/~mikey102/ListeningSonar.wmv

broadband users just click to play... dialup users right click and save as, then play locally after download.

both clips are taken from a Guppy sub on the surface before that part of code was redone (as the listening sonar would've been practically useless running on top)

Thumbs Up Neat little clips.

Keep up the work, there’s a lot of folks here eagerly awaiting the next update.

I hope the new USS Seawolf for VS doesn’t distract you too much! Because when I finally finish my S-Class I doubt you'll get any work done! (Can you say full interior-6 compartments Wink )

Really some great sound in those old sonar demos you posted Mike. I think it gives us an idea of the amount of detail you've packed into that sim.

How about another clip? Or maybe even a one mission beta release? Smile
