I just finished this book By Larry Bond: Dangerous Ground,the book deals witha aging 688I and a special mission.I read the book in 1 week and I think everyone who reads it will love it.The book goes into very tech info on the sub and getting sub qualifications.

 If you like modern subs a must read. Especially what you said about quals. Not a lot of action but very detailed about day to day sub ops I think.  |

Just be aware, the good guys don't shoot any weapons in the entire novel -- it ain't like 'Red Storm Rising'.
