just need to get a general idea of where a few spaces were located...

in the control room..

1- was there a port passageway around the attack center
2- on the starboard side, the way i see it, from fwd was the helmsman station, the ballast vent controls, the planesman stations, the high pressure manifold controls

the crew mess and galley...

1-was it located over the forward battery or the aft battery

thanks loads for any and all information or pointers to any ifno...

ok there were port and starboard passageways around the attack enter area, where the scope and the attack center stations were manned... right...

also... the crew bunks... were they aft of the mess spaces in the aft battery, forward of the engine room?

what was forward of the control room... it seems like an awful lot of space forward... radar and countermeasures stations???

If you're looking at WWII submarines, the Tang was not a class (although there was a Tang class in the 1950s). The USS Tang was a Gato class submarine. The three primary classes of WWII were Gato, Balao, and Tench; the only real difference was a change in operating depth to 400 feet in the Balaos.

I'd recommend "The Fleet Submarine in the U.S. Navy," published by the Naval Insitute Press. It's a fully detailed technological history of the development of U.S. fleet subs, and includes interior layouts. However, good luck finding it...it was published in the 1970s; I've forgotten who the author is and my copy disappeared in a move a few years back.

Hope this helps.

Tori: YES that definitely looks like a Tang class boat... i can't make out the hull number, but the PUFFS anttenas and the sail configuration definitely makes it out to be one of the Tang class boats...

if the hull numbers range from 563 to 568, and 576 then for sure it was one of em...

and, yes, i'd be verrrry interested in seeing the interior shots

THANKS T Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

akula_krieg: thanks, i'm aware that the US didn't have any Tang class subs in WWII... i'm working on the post WWII era... the beginnings of the Cold War... the guppies and early nuke boats...

Mike,

As usual TLAM beat me to it.

Sorry for these crappy scans but the book is pretty big and I had a hard time getting it on to my scanner.

I think you should probably get yourself a copy of "Cold War Submarines; The Design and Construction of U.S. and Soviet Submarines" by N. Polmar and K.J. Moore. It's expensive, but a valuable reference.
