norman polmar is again an american writing about something he knows little about

sadly he has not been aboard an alpha and i know that for a fact! on the other hand i have and ive been on many types of vessels in the russian navys

alpha project 705 lira was only tested at 400meters on her first dive because it was in the bearents sea however the americans have had reports that alpha went below 900 meters and yes this is true but if the welds were so poor why did it take so long to bring them into service? because they were improving quality control !

Hi Kapitan,
Polmar interviewed numerous Soviet designers for his book. He knows what he is talking about. How do you support your claims? What are your references? Please don't say 'word of mouth'. That's not good enough.

captains mainly and overviewing the design plans also numerous visits onboard the 705 also i have spoken to many ex skippers read logbooks from the earlier 705's because the ones launched after 1977 are still classified

to view log books please write to your local russian embassy enquiring about log books and design detail normaly this will fail but if you go to st petersburg the malakhit will allow you to view certain restricted plans for this sub and in detail specifications

norman polmar isnt 100% wrong just little bits he is a great researcher and well respected umong many people but due to his status many things are off limits to him (such as i dunno akula specification)

i am a fan of norman polmar so i am normaly bias towards him just in some areas im aginst him which is naturally healthy because if we agreed all the time then there would be problems

like many american researchers information is quite scrce the only way to find out is by word of moth

why did an alpha captain K123 write in the log book "dived to a depth of 729 meters" ? (in not so many words) testing of the alpha was done in the bearnts sea note that the deepest part is near norway (near north cape) and has a depth of only 411 meters taking a prototype submarine out to sea with ineperianced crews and not knowing how the sub would perform is dangerous as the crew couldnt be rescued if the sub snak in deeper water

I think anytime we discuss the specifications of various military systems we tend to allow a certain sense of national pride to creep in.

Also I think we need to recognize that most of these boats can out-perform the publically revealed specifications.

I'll allow that the Alpha can probably dive deeper than is widely recognized, just like the 688's can probably go alot faster than the Navy line of "at least 30tks"

i know alot of things i am not supposed to about russian submarineds which can be useful but generaly is a burden

i like to say i specialise in russian submarines
