Don't wait !!! 
Your question is the most difficult on. It depends on so many factors that will change during the time but it will take some years. I want to make a prereleas, that won't feature a war kampaign, but centered around forming the player to a commander. If i can come close to what i aim for then the learning curve will be quite steap. This is supposed to become a very hardcore sim. It will take alot of time to go through the whole Academy until you have qualified yourself for your own command, yes you will have to qualifie you.
This should lesser the pain of waiting. Till the final releas.

Wanted you to make some advertisement for night vision goggles ?
