Close everything running in the background ( except "Explorer" ), shut down the internet. and try again.
I'm just taking a guess here for this has been a lot of players problems especially when they keep an "Anti-Virus" program running in the back ground. ( A known Game killer ). |

Hmmm :hmm: Have you tried to uninstall SMP then "Defrag" and do another install ? The SMP manual even suggests you do that first. |

If when it locks up you get a steady tone from the sound card, then its
a sound problem. I had the same thing a while back playing SH2. It
would lock up solid and rebooting was the only answer. I replaced the
sound card to a better one and everything was fine after that......

That problem was mine too. I could play any other games just fine with
no lock-up problem but SH2 would lock somewhere into the game with
some sort of sound overlap, especially when playing multiplayer.
Once in a great while, it wold lock on single play (both SH2 & DC).
Everytime it locked, I was getting multi-sounds and it just would lock
and make a steady tone. I tried most everything but nothing worked
until I replaced the sound card. What type of sound card do you have?
I then went to a SB Audigy 2 (24 bit) and it never happened again....

Sounds like a memory pit.
Update your video and sound drivers.
What was the last game you had before Pirates? A fairly new Direct-X version shipped with Pirates and that may be playing merry hell with older drivers. ?
Hopefully you installed the lates DirectX that came with it too. |

I dont know a whole lot about computers, but I ran dxdiag and on sound 1 It said creative sound blaster pci 128d. If this doesnt help tell me where I need to look. The last game I played before pirates was pacific fighters. I installed the directx 9.0c that came with pf and on dxdiag under current version It says 9.0c installed. Thanks |

SB pci 128 is a rather old sound card. They have many newer cards available now. Its possible that the old card doesn't have the newer
drivers that work well with the newer DX9 series. It is the first thing I
would replace to play all the new games with DX9...
