For the past month I have had the automatic login setting selected.
Today I hit the 'log out' button (or link, rather) accidentally, then logged back in. All threads and forums where marked as read. However just before I logged out, there were at least 5 forums marked as having unread messages. So it seems the recodr of unread messages was whiped clean.. that's kind of annoying.

It also happens if you leave the internet and come back. Does that on any forum.

When you click the logut button all posts are automatically marked as read.
You cant prevent this as its built in the BB code.
You can trick it, next time you accidently logs out, then before you login again, go to your cookie dir and delete the one from this BB.

It also happens if you surf on to here using IE, then surf to any other site, without reading any/all new topics, then closes IE and opens IE again and surfs back here.
Cuase phpBB, and afew others automarks all forums as read when you leave it / closes the current IE session.

I was just navigation with the forum buttons and links. No back/forward buttons. Almost all the forums were marked unread. I went into the DW forum.. read a thread, went back to the forum, then went back to the forum index... and boom.. all forums marked as unread. Evil or Very Mad
I did open a new browser window accidentally while in the DW forum. I can't imagine that being the cause though.

There is a mod available to solve this problem, but it's a lot of code that must be edited:-(

Damn, I was hoping there was a fix in the phpBB updates that would be easy for the admins here to install.

Im think its more like a user problem, not a bug in the phpBB.
Have you tried deleting the cookie that is set by the forum?
Try also logout/in once via the logout button on the main page.
